Williams had to fight hard to get past Kuznetsova

Roland Garros 2013 Day 10: Serena fights, Roger falls

Men's Singles

2009 champion Roger Federer took on French No.1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the most anticipated Men's match on day 10 at Roland Garros.

Second seed Federer broke with a forehand winner in the fifth game and held for 4-2 but then could only gather a further seven games in the match as a dominant Tsonga came through 7-5 6-3 6-3 to reach his first Roland Garros semi-final.

The French No.1 was at his dynamic best against Federer

It was certainly one of Federer's most comprehensive defeats in a major and the 31 year-old will need to rebound quickly as he bids for an 8th Wimbledon title.

In the other Men's quarter final Tommy Robredo simply had nothing left after his torturous route through to the last eight.

The 32nd seed was crushed 6-2 6-1 6-1 by David Ferrer as the 4th seed cruised into his second consecutive French Open semi-final and fourth semi-final  in the last five Grand Slams.

Women's Singles

In a match between two of the craftiest players on the WTA tour Sara Errani and Agnieszka Radwanska treated the Philippe Chatrier crowd to a feast of shot making in an exciting encounter.

After the Italian 2012 finalist took the first set 6-4 there were eight breaks of serve in the second set before Errani claimed her first top five win 6-4 7-6(8-6).

Match of the Day: S.Williams (1) vs Kuznetsova (U)

On the same court, in the same round, four years earlier Svetlana Kuznetsova edged Serena Williams 7-6(7-3) 5-7 7-5 proving that the Russian is one of the very few players with the power and experience to seriously trouble Williams.

As the re-match got underway Williams continued her dominant form with two breaks of serve in the opening set closing it out with back to back aces.

Kuznetsova was on form against Williams
However 2009 champion Kuznetsova broke for 2-0 in the second set with some heavy hitting.  Williams missed a smash on break back point in the third game and was then broken again to go down 4-0.

Three consecutive breaks followed before Williams had the Russian at love-40 serving for the set but could not convert and Kuznetsova levelled the match.

When the unseeded player quickly opened a 2-0 lead in the decider Williams looked in real trouble especially when the Russian held three break points for a double break lead.

A delighted Williams celebrates a hard fought victory

Williams crucially survived and rediscovered her best form to break back and reach 2-2.

Having led 40-love in the fifth game the American top seed went down break point but the Russian could not break through.

The 2002 winner broke again in the next game.

Serving for the match at 5-3 Williams struck a swinging forehand volley winner to come through her first major test 6-1 3-6 6-3 after an hour and 57 minutes.

Amazingly it is only the 31 year-old's third last four appearance in Paris and her first since 2003.
