2011 Champion Djokovic destroyed Chardy |
Wimbledon 2013 Day 6: Novak and Serena race through
It was an action packed day six at a sun bathed All England Club with great action happening everywhere you could look round the grounds.
Djokovic was at his dominant best against Chardy |
Top seed Novak Djokovic laid down a marker for the rest of the Men's draw with a dominant 86 minute win over 28th seeded Jeremy Chardy.
The 2011 Champion hammered 38 winners past the Australian Open quarter finalist while striking 3 unforced errors. The rest of the Men's draw should take note.

The World No.1 next faces 13th seed Tommy Haas as the veteran German came through an entertaining four set encounter with Eastbourne champion Feliciano Lopez.
4th seeded David Ferrer - who will be moving to a career high ranking of three - fought through 6-7(7-9) 7-6(7-2) 2-6 6-1 6-2 against the mercurial Alexandr Dolgopolov. 31 year-old Ferrer will be looking to reach his second consecutive Wimbledon quarter final when he takes on Ivan Dodig who moved through when Igor Sijsling retired.
Ferrer could be on course for a quarter final meeting with Juan Martin Del Potro as the giant Argentinean saw off Gregor Zemlja in straight sets.

The 2009 US Open champion won't meet Kei Nishikori next as the Japanese No.1 fell to former Eastbourne champion Andreas Seppi in five sets.
Back to the top quarter and 2010 finalist Tomas Berdych was in some trouble against Kevin Anderson on Court 1 but got through in four sets. The South African 27th seed took the first set and later led 5-2 in the fourth but the powerful Czech came through 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5.
Berdych next faces Australian former quarter finalist Bernard Tomic after the Aussie upset ninth seed Richard Gasquet 7-6(9-7) 5-7 7-5 7-6(7-5) in a Centre Court thriller.

Williams was a step too far for Kimiko |
In a late evening Centre Court encounter under the roof - moved from Court 1 - five-time champion Serena Williams had too much power for former semi-finalist Kimiko Date-Krumm and dispatched the 42 year-old veteran 6-2 6-0.
The Japanese former World No.4 fought hard and hit some wonderful shots but was always outclassed by the World No.1 as Williams earned her 600th career match win and extended her personal best winning streak to 34.
Still it was a terrific and memorable singles tournament for Date-Krumm who is still in the Mixed Doubles.
The American will next face grass loving German Sabine Lisicki as the big hitting 23rd seed hit back from a set down to defeat Sam Stosur 4-6 6-2 6-1. Lisicki is a former semi-finalist and two-time quarter finalist and will bring a lot of game when she faces Williams on Monday. (She also has the best smile in women's tennis.)
Robson's comeback victory thrilled a packed Court 2 |
From a home perspective the story of the day was that Laura Robson recovered from a nightmare start to defeat Marina Erakovic 1-6 7-5 6-3 on Court 2 and become the first British woman into the last 16 at SW19 for fifteen years.
Erakovic was superb in the opener with some terrific serving and fearsome forehands and she broke in the second on the way to leading 5-3.
Robson hung tough and took advantage of some nerves from the New Zealander to break back when Erakovic served for the match.
The 19 year-old Brit reeled off eight straight games to lead 4-0 in the decider.

Erakovic got one of the breaks back but, in front of a rapturous Court 2 crowd, Robson served it out at 5-3 with a winner on match point.
Robson will face a tough challenge in the last 16 as Kaia Kanepi followed up her victory over seventh seed Angelique Kerber with a comfortable 6-2 6-3 defeat of American Alison Riske. The powerful Estonian will be no push over for the British teenager on Monday.
2012 finalist Agnieszka Radwanska somehow fought past big hitting American teenager Madison Keyes 7-5 4-6 6-3 despite the 18 year-old blasting 67 winners on Court 3.
The 4th seeded Pole next faces grass loving Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova as the 2010 semi-finalist (and 2011 quarter finalist) overcame a mid match wobble to see off Petra Martic in three sets. Pironkova lives for the grass and won the last meeting on the turf against Radwanska.
Li Na and Roberta Vinci setup an attractive fourth round meeting with contrasting victories. Vinci saw off fellow seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-1 6-4 and is now close to sealing a place in the top 10. Li won a fluctuating match against 32nd seed Klara Zakopalova 4-6 6-0 8-6 after the Czech player served for the match at 6-5 in the decide.
In matches held over from Friday 17th seed Sloane Stephens and Puerto Rican teenager Monica Puig both eventually came through 6-4 in the third against Petra Cetkovska and Eva Birnerova respectively.
2011 Champion Petra Kvitova looked awful for large portions of her match with Ekaterina Makarova but on Saturday the Czech eighth seed looked back to her superb best.
Starting from a break down at 1-2 in the decider the former World No.2 reeled off five of six games to come through 6-3 2-6 6-3.

Kvitova finished in excellent form against Makarova |
Starting from a break down at 1-2 in the decider the former World No.2 reeled off five of six games to come through 6-3 2-6 6-3.
If Kvitova can maintain that form - reminiscent of her title run two years ago - she should be in the final next weekend.
Marray and Fleming were in fine form |
With the doubles events in full flow defending champion Jonny Marray and new partner Colin Fleming moved into the third round with a high quality 6-3 6-4 7-6(9-7) victory over Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak.
The British ninth seeds next face sixth seeds Daniel Nestor and Robert Lindstedt on Monday.
Johanna Konta and Dominic Inglot won the epic match of the day in the Mixed Doubles draw with a 4-6 6-3 19-17 defeat of Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor and Nicolas Almagro.
