Robson was at her very best to see off Kirilenko |
Wimbledon 2013 Day 2: Superb Robson ousts Kirilenko
Women's singles
On the court she won the junior crown five years ago British No.1 Laura Robson put in a magnificent performance to defeat 10th seed Maria Kirilenko 6-3 6-4 to reach the second round for the second time in her young career.
Robson's forehand in particular was tremendous |
This was Robson at her thrilling best with aces and the occasional excellent touch shot mixed in with her heavy lefty groundstrokes which fired off so many superb winners it was hard not to lose count of them. Crucially recent issues with her serve did not surface.
The running forehand up the line that took her to set point in the first set was as good a shot as anyone - male or female - has hit at this year's tournament.
The 19 year-old next has a very winnable meeting with Colombian qualifier Mariana Duque-Marino.
Heather Watson could not join Robson in the second round as the British No.2 fell to big hitting 18 year-old Madison Keys 6-3 7-5 on Court 2.
There was one break in the first set before the Brit led 4-2 in the second but could not keep hold of the lead against the heavier shots of the American. It is still early days in Watson's comeback after suffering from glandular fever and she will be back stronger.
Out on court 17 wild card, where I spent most of my evening, wild card Tara Moore put in a terrific performance but narrowly fell 7-5 5-7 7-5 against four-time major quarter finalist Kaia Kanepi.
After her leg was loaded with 20 kg of strapping in the decider Moore fought back from 1-4 15-40 to get to 5-5 and looked to have broken in the eleventh game before the Umpire overruled on a forehand from the Estonian that was called wide.
Williams looked good but has several more gears to go to |
Reigning champion Serena Williams began her title defence with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Mandy Minella.
It was a solid but unspectacular start from the American who went behind 0-2 in the second set before hitting back to extend her career best winning streak to 32 matches.
The World No.1 is two wins away from 600th career match win.
Williams' opponent in the final 12 months ago Agnieszka Radwanska crushed qualifier Yvonne Meusburger 6-1 6-1 while her projected quarter final opponent Li Na raced past 2007 quarter finalist Michaella Krajicek by the same scoreline.
The first victory on day two belonged to 42 year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm who destroyed 18 year-old German qualifier Carina Witthoeft 6-0 6-2.
The Japanese veteran, a semi-finalist in 1996, has a winnable second round match against Alexandra Cadantu to look forward to as she bids to reach a second major third of 2013 having gone that far in Melbourne.
Men's singles
It was a solid start for the World No.1 |
The other major seeds in the Serb's half of the draw all progressed to round two fairly comfortably with big hitting Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro winning in straight sets while French Open finalist and French No.2 Richard Gasquet conceded sets to Martin Alund and Marcel Granollers respectively.
In their second meeting in four days Feliciano Lopez repeated his Eastbourne final victory over Gilles Simon while 16th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber shook hands in the fifth set with Ivan Dodig simply stating "I'm tired".
