Heather celebrates her 2nd round victory |
Australian Open 2013 Day 3 - Heather's amazing comeback
My featured player from day three in Melbourne again has to be British No.1 Heather Watson who produced a tremendous fight back to win her second round match.
When Watson won her first WTA singles title in Osaka last October she saved four match points against Chang Kai-Chen to win an epic final lasting well over three hours.
So we should not be too surprised that today in Melbourne she conjured a similar victory from the brink of defeat to reach the Australian Open third round for the first time.
The British No.1 survived three consecutive match points in the second set tie-break to defeat former Australian Open Junior Champion Ksenia Pervak 4-6, 7-6(9-7), 6-2 in two minutes over the three hour mark.
This was a match where Watson often did not play her best but once again displayed superb fighting qualities, guts and determination.
Having levelled the match by winning the marathon second set she stepped up her form in the decider - despite suffering from some cramp - to finish the encounter in fine form.

The 20 year-old is now through to a the last 32 of a Grand Slam for the second time, after Wimbledon last year, and she will next face the same opponent in 4th seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
Watson will have nothing to lose against the Pole on Friday and can draw opon the experience of their clash at SW19 and how much she has progressed since.
It has already been a wonderful week for the Brit who will pick up at least 160 ranking points and will certainly move to a new career high ranking after the tournament. Hopefully there will more to celebrate for Watson before the end of the tournament.
