Australian Open 2013 - Laura's Big Win

Laura's delight after beating Kvitova
Australian Open 2013 Day 4 - Laura's Big Win

Just as day four in Melbourne was being put to bed British No.2 Laura Robson scored a brilliant 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 victory over eighth seed and 2011 Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova.

After defeating Kim Clijsters and Li Na in New York last year it marks the second consecutive major that the British teen has dispatched major winners.

In a decidedly scrappy affair, where long protracted rallies were few and far between as expected, Robson showed superb poise and composure to recover from a poor opening set and was the far steadier player at the end.

Having come through the battle of the lefties the 18 year-old, who turns 19 on Monday, faces a revenge match against fellow rising star Sloane Stephens in the last 32.  The American teen defeated Robson in two tight sets in Hobart.

Twelve months ago Kvitova seemed poised to rule the tennis world and was within touching distance of the World No.1 ranking.

She has slipped back to 8th and is clearing not playing anyway near the level she was when she brilliantly won Wimbledon 18 months ago. However if the Czech can regain her confidence with her weapons she can reclaim her seat at the top table.
