Kimiko fires a forehand in her win over Peer |
I had intended to feature another player to provide some variety but I had to go again with the amazing Kimiko Date-Krumm as no another second round win was as special for me on day four in Melbourne.
Aged 42 years and 111 days the former World No.4 continued her memorable run with a 6-2, 7-5 defeat of Shahar Peer to reach the last 32.
The Japanese veteran was cruising up 6-2 and 3-0 a double break in the second set when the wheels came off for a while and she found herself down 3-4.
She steadied the ship just in time but was broken serving for the match at 5-4. Two games later she did not make the same mistake.
It is the first time Date-Krumm has reached the third round in fourteen main draw appearances since her comeback and the first time since her run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 1996.
She next faces a player half her age in 21 year-old Serb Bojana Jovanovski who put out 17th seeded Lucie Safarova.
The Serbian is certainly a big hitting and if on form will be a lot for Date-Krumm to handle but it is certainly not the worst draw and it will be a big match for Jovanovski as this is her best ever run at a major.
Date-Krumm beat the Serb on a carpet court in Toyota in 2009 although certainly Jovanovski has come on since then. Whatever happens it has been a memorable week for the oldest player in the draw whatever happens on Saturday.
