What have we learnt from 2013 ATP/WTA Week 1?

Two titles this Australian summer? Serena wins Brisbane

What have we learnt from 2013 ATP/WTA Week 1?

Brisbane International - WTA

The Queen of the WTA - Serena's electrifying 2012 form has already well and truly continued into 2013 and there are 127 women in Melbourne who should be waving white flags next week.

The outgoing No.1 - Vika (and her toe) really did not want a smack down from Williams on the eve of her Australian Open defence. She will be praying the Olympic, Wimbledon and US Open Champ is in the other half of the draw.

Comeback kid - Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is back after a poor 2012.  The Russian could be a factor this season after impressive wins over Kvitova and Kerber.

Brisbane International - ATP

US Open Champ - Murray came through some tough moments impressively to retain his crown in Brisbane. The British No.1 looks primed for another terrific Aussie Open.

His emotional speech was a lovely tribute. Get well soon Ross.

The Rising Star - Grigor Dimitrov is surely bound for at least the top 20 this year after starting the season in great form with his run to the final in Brisbane.

Qatar ExxonMobil Open, Doha - ATP

French flair - Gasquet mixed his beautiful backhand with some gritty determination to take his first title of the year.  If he can continue to clinch these close encounters maybe he can keep hold of his top 10 spot.

The former champ - Davydenko is still with us! He showed that his superb groundies are still amongst the best in the game when on-song.  If he could help healthy - not a good sign that he got injured during the final - maybe he could be seeded come Roland Garros.

The Iron man - Ferrer played an ATP 250 event and did not win.  It was a surprise to see the Spaniard dispatched by Davydenko but he will still be a consistent factor throughout the year.

Shenzhen Longgang Gemdale Open - WTA

Vets are best - Li and Zakopalova showed, along with Williams, that in pro tennis 30 continues to be the new 20.  Starting the season with an all-30s final is a sign the older generation will be a huge factor in 2013.

Asian legend - hard hitting Li will be a threat at all the majors and could be on course for a top 5 return. Battling to the title bodes well for her Melbourne campaign.

Czech mate - Zakopalova reaches a career best ranking at 30.  Good things come to those who wait. Could Klara crack the top 20? She's not far off now.

ASB Classic, Auckland - WTA

Little Sparrow - Radwanska is determined to stay in the top 5.  Keeping clear of the big guns Auckland could have been a good move for the Pole.

Hitting out - Wickmayer and Barthel could both be regular top 20 threats if they keep up their big hitting form. Wicky is back at No.20 this week.

Back with a bang - Cara Black is still a superb doubles player as the former World No.1 clearly displayed by winning her comeback WTA event as a Mother with Rodionova.

Aircel Chennai Open - ATP

A New Name - Roberto Bautista Agut is a professional tennis player! A new name for me - should have paid more attention to the Challengers in 2012 - and wow what a start to the year with a defeat of Berdych en route to a first final.

Steady Top Tenner - Tipsarevic wins the title a year after losing a thriller to Raonic. I keep expecting Janko to slide down the rankings but he ain't moving.
